We are all GP obstetricians, qualified to deliver low-risk obstetric care as well as providing post-natal support and all types of general practice consults. We provide obstetric on call services to the hospital 24 hours a day, 7 days a week including caesarean births. As GP obstetricians, we are well trained to manage your pregnancy as well as any other physical and mental health needs. We value the relationships that we build with families during pregnancy and are proud to be able to continue to provide general practice care as your family grows. You can see any doctor of your choice and you are also welcome to swap to see someone else if you would like to. We all work together as a team, but acknowledge that everyone has slightly different styles of consulting and it is important that you feel comfortable and supported by your GP obstetrician.
Your first antenatal visit generally occurs before 10 weeks and an appointment can be booked by calling Leongatha Healthcare on (03) 5662 2201 or booking online at leongathamedical.com.au. Generally, antenatal visits are scheduled very 4-6 weeks until 28 weeks, every 2-4 weeks until 36 weeks, then every 1-2 weeks until you have your baby. Most of these antenatal visits are with your GP obstetrician and the other appointments are with a midwife at the hospital.
During business hours or if your birth is planned (an induction or elective Caesarean section), your usual GP obstetrician will manage your delivery. As a group we provide 24/7 obstetric care. After hours, on weekends and on public holidays, there is always a GP obstetrician on call. If your GP obstetrician has any planned leave around the time of your birth they will let you know and arrange for one of the other doctors to cover.
The indexation of Medicare rebates has been less than inflation since the early 1990’s requiring us to charge private fees to be able to cover the costs of running a medical clinic.
The out of pocket fee to see a GP obstetrician for an antenatal visit is the same as the out of pocket fee for a standard general practice consultations at the clinic. All patients on a healthcare card and children under 16 are bulk-billed, meaning there are no out of pocket fees. If you are experiencing any financial hardship, please let your doctor know. There are no fees associated with inpatient care at Leongatha Hospital including for delivery and post-natal care.
The birth suites are large and spacious. All of the rooms in maternity are single rooms and can accommodate your and your partner if required. We are proud of the modern, spacious facilities and personalised care that is equal with many private hospitals.
